Journal Prompts for deeper inquiry:
1. Recall a time someone disappointed you. What story had you written about them that didn’t match reality?
2. What core need of yours was most activated in that disappointment (safety, belonging, validation, guidance)?
3. Where in your life do you tend to outsource peace of mind to other people’s behavior?
4. What “shoulds” do you most often project onto others? How do those “shoulds” create suffering for you?
5. Think of someone you admire. How can you appreciate their gifts without expecting perfection?
6. In what relationships could you hold more compassion while also strengthening boundaries?
7. What lessons have you learned from past disappointments that could inform how you engage now?
8. What practices or supports help you meet your own needs without depending on others to fulfill them?
9. How might you respond differently the next time someone doesn’t meet your expectations?
10. What would it look like to reclaim authorship of your peace, regardless of how others behave?
11. Think of a time someone clearly expected you to act a certain way. How did it feel to be on the receiving end of their attachment or aversion?
12. Where in your life do you feel pressure to live up to someone else’s story about you? How does that story shape (or limit) how you show up?
13. What’s one example of a “should” you know others have projected onto you? How does noticing that change the way you think about the “shoulds” you project onto them?
14. How does it shift your perspective to remember that, just as you suffer when others don’t meet your expectations, others suffer when you don’t meet theirs?
15. If rāga/dveṣa are part of being human, what compassion can you extend to yourself for having them, and to others for projecting them onto you?
